Wanjiku got her first corporate job in January 2026. Her offer letter said KES 80,000 gross. When her first payslip arrived, she saw KES 58,340 net. She called HR confused. Nobody had explained PAYE, SHIF, NSSF or Housing Levy to her. This guide is what HR should have sent her on day one.
Why Your Gross Salary and Net Pay Differ
Every employed Kenyan has money deducted from their salary before it reaches their account. These deductions are not optional - they are legal requirements set by KRA and the government. Understanding them is not just useful, it is your right as an employee in Kenya.
The main deductions are PAYE (income tax), SHIF (health insurance at 2.75%), NSSF (pension at 6%), and Housing Levy (1.5%). Each has a specific formula. Once you know the formula, your payslip stops being a mystery and starts making complete sense.
The Four Deductions Every Kenyan Employee Faces
PAYE is calculated on a sliding scale - the more you earn, the higher your tax rate. Together, these four deductions can reduce your gross salary by 25% to 40% depending on how much you earn. A KES 80,000 gross salary typically nets around KES 58,000 after all statutory deductions.
The 2026 KRA PAYE Tax Bands Explained
KRA uses five tax bands in 2026. The first KES 24,000 per month is taxed at 10%. The next KES 8,333 at 25%. Anything between KES 32,333 and KES 500,000 is taxed at 30%. Above KES 500,000 up to KES 800,000 is 32.5%. Anything above KES 800,000 is taxed at 35%.
You also get a personal relief of KES 2,400 per month which is deducted from your final PAYE figure. This means even if your calculated tax is KES 5,000, you only pay KES 2,600 after relief. Most Kenyans earning below KES 30,000 pay very little PAYE because of this personal relief provision.
"The personal relief of KES 2,400 per month was introduced to protect low-income earners. Anyone earning below KES 24,000 gross pays zero PAYE in Kenya." - KRA Finance Act 2023, Section 30
Real Example - KES 80,000 Salary Full Breakdown
On KES 80,000 gross, PAYE works out to approximately KES 14,160 after personal relief. SHIF is KES 2,200. NSSF is KES 4,320. Housing Levy is KES 1,200. Total deductions come to KES 21,880. Net pay is KES 58,120. Use our free PAYE calculator to get your exact figures instantly.
If any deduction on your payslip is not labelled clearly, ask HR to explain it in writing. You are legally entitled to a full breakdown of every deduction made from your salary under the Employment Act Cap 226 of Kenya. Employers who refuse to provide this breakdown are in violation of Kenyan labour law.

Open PAYE CalculatorWhat To Do If Your Employer Over-Deducts PAYE
If you believe your employer is over-deducting PAYE, request a PAYE reconciliation in writing. Your employer must provide this on request. You can also file a complaint directly with KRA through the iTax portal at itax.kra.go.ke using your personal KRA PIN number.
Over-deduction of PAYE is more common than most people think, especially when employees change jobs mid-year or receive irregular bonuses. KRA allows you to claim a refund for overpaid PAYE through iTax. The process takes 30 to 90 days but the money is legally yours and KRA is obligated to refund it.
