Chebet got her October 2024 payslip and noticed her health deduction had dropped from KES 1,700 to KES 412. She called her HR manager thinking it was a mistake. It was not. What Is SHIF and How It Replaced NHIF
The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) replaced the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) in October 2024 under the Social Health Insurance Act. The key difference is the contribution method. NHIF used a fixed tier table where higher earners paid a flat KES 1,700 maximum. SHIF uses a percentage of gross salary with no upper cap.
The rate is 2.75% of your gross monthly salary. The minimum contribution is There is no maximum cap, meaning high earners pay proportionally more than they did under NHIF. For most Kenyans earning below KES 61,818, SHIF is actually cheaper than the old NHIF rates.

How SHIF Is Calculated
The formula is simple. Take your gross salary and multiply by 0.0275. If the result is below KES 300, your deduction is KES 300. If above, your deduction is the calculated amount with no upper limit. Your employer deducts this and remits it to the Social Health Authority by the 9th of the following month.
